Morning Prayers

The Scripture pronounces all that God made “good;” therefore if evil exists, it exists without God. But this is impossible in reality, for He made all “that was made.” Hence the inevitable revelation of Christian Science — that evil is unreal; and this is the best of it. On April 15, 1891, the Christian Science textbook lay on a table in a burning building. A Christian Scientist entered the house through a window and snatched this book from the flames. Instantly the table sank a charred mass. The covers of the book were burned up, but not one word in the book was effaced. If the world were in ashes, the contents of “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” would remain immortal.

Pray God to take away my testimony of the lying senses, and increase my faith and spiritual sense.

Discussion points

96 — WATCH lest, in your denial of false testimony, you build it up instead of tearing it down. One can say that it is not as serious to have the devil in you, as it is to have God out of you. Hence a higher motive in striving to eliminate error would be to eliminate anything that could claim to shut out the sunshine of God’s love. Before one affirms the allness of God, he should know that nothing can darken man’s thought, or cause him to believe that he is or ever can be shut off from the primitive good that is his birthright.

The dragging anchor of a ship would have to be pulled up before the ship could progress. It is the testimony of matter and its supposed conditions that constitutes the anchor that so holds thought, that it cannot progress into the realm where all problems are solvable. Therefore, the denial of the evidence before the material senses, and the declaration that matter is nothing, are needed in order to convince thought that matter is nothing because it is nothing to consider, nothing to fear, nothing to work with, nothing to try to correct. This enables thought to let go its anchor, to retreat from the body, or effect, in order to work in and with cause.

If a moving picture was blurred because the lens was out of focus, and you saw me striving to correct the error at the screen, you would declare, “There is nothing wrong with the screen, so there is nothing to correct there. Your belief that such is the case is false. The error is in the setting of the lens in the projector, and must be corrected there.” You would deny the belief that there was anything wrong with the screen, in order to make me retreat from the screen and go to the projector, where the correction can readily be made.

When a student cherishes the purpose to harmonize matter, or effect, through Science, it shows that he believes that the process of denying material testimony and calling it nothing, is the way to make it harmonious; whereas the effect of such a mistake is often to make the discord seem more real, and so build it up.

GOLDEN TEXT: I Samuel 16 : 7

“The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”

Is it possible to know why we are put into this condition of mortality?

It is quite as possible to know wherefore man is thus conditioned, as to be certain that he is in a state of mortality. The only evidence of the existence of a mortal man, or of a material state and universe, is gathered from the five personal senses. This delusive evidence, Science has dethroned by repeated proofs of its falsity.

We have no more proof of human discord, — sin, sickness, disease, or death, — than we have that the earth’s surface is flat, and her motions imaginary. If man’s ipse dixit as to the stellar system is correct, this is because Science is true, and the evidence of the senses is false. Then why not submit to the affirmations of Science concerning the greater subject of human weal and woe? Every question between Truth and error, Science must and will decide.

Does it not limit the power of Mind to deny the possibility of communion with departed friends — dead only in belief?

Does it limit the power of Mind to say that addition is not subtraction in mathematics ? The Science of Mind reveals the impossibility of two individual sleepers, in different phases of thought, communicating, even if touching each other corporeally; or for one who sleeps to communicate with another who is awake. Mind’s possibilities are not lessened by being confined and conformed to the Science of being. If mortal mind and body are myths, what is the connection between them and real identity, and why are there as many identities as mortal bodies? Evil in the beginning claimed the power, wisdom, and utility of good; and every creation or idea of Spirit has its counterfeit in some matter belief. Every material belief hints the existence of spiritual reality; and if mortals are instructed in spiritual things, it will be seen that material belief, in all its manifestations, reversed, will be found the type and representative of verities priceless, eternal, and just at hand.

Alone? with Thee, when the bright day is breaking?
Alone? with Thee as evening shadows fall?
Still, still with Thee in the dark hour of midnight,
How can I fear, since Thou art All-in-all?
And I to Thee, in the glad hour of triumph,
And I to Thee all praise and glory give.
Still, still to Thee, when error loudest calleth
To Thee I look, in whom I move and live.
Alone with Thee! ‘Tis perfect happiness!
Alone with Thee I have no thoughts but Thine.
Still, still with Thee! ‘Tis peace and joy unbounded!
I’m ne’er alone, Life, Truth, and Love are mine.

Book: Mary Baker Eddy, Her Spiritual Footsteps by Gilbert Carpenter

The dampness that causes the walls to sweat and the pipes to rust in an unheated church, is a human replica of the disintegrating effect of human thinking, and points to the need of a daily protection. If Mrs. Eddy once found it necessary to remind the Directors, to keep the dampness out of the church with a furnace fire, we should remind ourselves that we have a spiritual fire which dissipates error, and we should never permit this fire to go out or to grow cold. Students must keep themselves daily in a state of thought that dispels the illusion called evil.

If we do not control our possessions with the understanding that they are spiritual, they will control us with the belief that they are material.
