Morning Prayers

Life understood spiritually is heaven here. Pray God to help you awake to the claims of error, and awake to the truth that destroys them. Whenever error would try to make sin, sickness, disease or death seem real, Good overrules it, and it makes them more unreal to us. Good reverses every evil argument and effort and brings out the opposite good.

Pray God to take away my testimony of the lying senses, and increase my faith and spiritual sense.

119 — WATCH lest the false evidence of material sense cause you to accept the suggestion that a case is hopeless. Every case is hopeless if you start from the basis that you have a claim. You cannot admit the reality of error as a claim, and from that basis make it unreal and so destroy it.

Hear what Mrs. Eddy says on this point in Unity of Good, page 54: “To say that there is a false claim, called sickness, is to admit all there is of sickness; for it is nothing but a false claim. To be healed, one must lose sight of a false claim. If the claim be present to the thought, then disease becomes as tangible as any reality. To regard sickness as a false claim, is to abate the fear of it; but this does not destroy the so-called fact of the claim. In order to be whole, we must be insensible to every claim of error.”

Let us suppose that we have found ourselves cast out in the world, destitute of means or resources. In our distress a kind friend has come to us and told us that we need not be troubled any longer because of want, for we are heirs to a comfortable home and rich estate, so that we need want for nothing.

Greatly relieved by such intelligence, we at once take possession of our home, procure an abstract of the title, and feel grateful to our friend for the interest shown. After a time a person walks into our pleasant abode and claims to have a right there, that we have been misinformed, and he has come to possession. In distress we seek our friend, who tells us that the person’s claim is false, so that we need have no fear. We return and assert our rights, and the claimant leaves. He soon returns, however, with quite an array of arguments. We are not so much afraid since we believe that his claim is false, but we turn to our friend again and are told to examine our title thoroughly for ourselves. This we do by studying the abstract, and can now understand that we, and we alone, have the right to occupy our home without fear of molestation, and that this claim, being false, is no claim at all. We feel confident and strong, for we are sustained by law. Since there is but one law governing the case, the false claim is without law, and has nothing to support it. The only ground it ever had to even seem real was our fear that it might be so. When that is removed by our better understanding, the claimant and the claim, which are really one, disappear.

What is this false claimant, or claim, but mortal belief in its various forms of discord which would rob us of our true home, our harmonious relation to God and the universe? In the Science of Life and revelation of Truth, we find a perfect title to our inheritance which is “incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away.” A very complete abstract we have in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by a careful study of which we can attain such familiarity with our true title that we can successfully dispute any false claim that presents itself.

A Lesson in Art and Science.

Why, after working for months in my own thought, trying to realize the Truth, examining my motives, correcting my actions, erasing my seeming errors, had I no definite results, no clear conception of the perfect man?

In my perplexity, the opportunity of entering an art school presented itself. I began my first drawing from the cast. My professor said one day in criticising my work, “I notice that you work a long time over your paper without looking at your model. You must study your model more, get your thought filled with its perfect proportions, see nothing but that, think of nothing but that. Don’t work aimlessly. Say to yourself exactly what you intend to put down. Let every line be a true line—no guess-work about it—never mind the likeness at this stage, that will come. Look more at the model than at your work.”

Then the answer to my question, Why? came. But had not our dear Mother told us the same thing on page 144 in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “We must form perfect models in thought, and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives.”
