Morning Prayers

Prayer For Yourself – I am the child of God. His care and love surround me. Animal magnetism cannot reach me to make me fear or be afraid.

The Christian Scientist’s Prayer – There is no matter and no mortal mind. God is All-in-all. All is harmony, health, holiness. This is the prayer ‘unceasing’ to be used on all occasions and at all times. It lays the axe at the root of unreality, materiality (that forbidden tree) and cuts it down. Preserve a sacred silence on this subject of prayer. (Signed, Author of S. & H.)

Discussion points

410 — WATCH lest you forget that the most subtle form of animal magnetism is the argument that you can be handled by it and not know or recognize it, so that you will protest vigorously that you are not a victim of it, just when you are. In order to be sure that you are not handled by animal magnetism, you must do what a traveller does who, although he believes he is on the right road, checks up on himself by using his compass. The use of Science and Health will show you what you should think and express, and so expose any error.

GOLDEN TEXT: I Isaiah 29 : 15

“Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?”

In February of 1872, Mrs. Eddy was called at the suggestion of several doctors to visit a lady who was about to die of consumption. When she arrived, she found there were three or four doctors in attendance, fine men she observed, who had used all of their medical knowledge in trying to save this lady from dying. When they found there was no hope for her recovery, they decided “to test that woman,” because they had heard of someone who had been cured by her. Mrs. Eddy came when word reached her and healed the woman quickly; then told her she could get up, and that she would help her dress. She then asked the doctors to leave the room while she helped the lady to dress, after which they joined the doctors and her husband in the sitting room. One of the doctors, an old experienced physician, witnessed this and said, “How did you do it? What did you do?” She said, “I can’t tell you, — it was God.” And he said, “Why don’t you write a book, publish it, and give it to the world?” When she returned home she opened her Bible, and her eyes fell on the words, “Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever.” (Isaiah 30:8)

Christian Scientists, as watchmen on the towers, have no time to turn their attention from their labor of Life and Love. As in Nehemiah’s time, so now, the enemy of Truth is stirred; it declares that the walls of our Jerusalem — the understanding of Truth — shall not be built. And the demand for vigilance is as imperative now as then. There is no time for idle words. Our influence must be on the side of Truth. The hungry must be fed, not with the husks of the flesh, but with pure words of Life. “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” If our expressions be idle words, what will the harvest be? If we knowingly scatter bad seed, shall we murmur at an unprofitable harvest?

In the sixth chapter of Revelation we have a remarkable picture of the mental condition which is rightly named a martyr, as it depicts those slain for their testimony to the word of God. It is, however, well to note that their “souls” (sense) were “under the altar,” not upon it or above it. In other words, they represented a belief that evil has power to make the good suffer and that the processes of divine justice were unduly delayed, a belief which Christian Science not only repudiates but proves untrue. The opening of the fifth seal in presenting this condition leads up to the higher state of consciousness typified by white robes. Even the noblest Christian martyrs needed the purification thus prefigured, for each and all who would enter the kingdom of God must yield up every vestige of belief in a power opposed to God: and this is where the crucial test comes.
