Morning Prayers

To First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Lawrence

It is the purpose of divine Love to resurrect the understanding, and the kingdom of God, the reign of harmony already within us.

The pride of circumstance or power is the prince of this world that has nothing in Christ. All power and happiness are spiritual, and proceed from goodness. Sacrifice self to bless one another, even as God has blessed you. Forget self in laboring for mankind; then will you woo the weary wanderer to your door, win the pilgrim and stranger to your church, and find access to the heart of humanity. While pressing meekly on, be faithful, be valiant in the Christian’s warfare, and peace will crown your joy.

Lovingly yours,

Mary Baker Eddy

Discussion points

143 — WATCH lest you believe that the spiritual idea, which is the real nature of man, can be lost, contaminated, or rendered inoperative, because of any human condition, happening or evidence.

In Matthew 4:7 Jesus says, “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.” If “the Lord” is God transformed into idea, or man, then our task is to realize that this Christ nature in ourselves or others cannot be lost, that it cannot be defiled or even tempted by any earthly suggestions or conditions.

When you are tempted to feel sick or to sin, you can realize that man’s real nature is superior to such phases of the dream of mortality.

Once a woman had an internal displacement. She was a Christian Scientist, but she was greatly tempted to submit to an operation, because it seemed the only way to get relief. She started for her practitioner’s office in order to tell her what she planned to do, but on the way she became so grateful for Christian Science, that she determined to live up to its teachings to the best of her ability, even if she were never healed of the physical disorder (C.S. Sentinel, August 15, 1931).

This lady experienced her healing right then and there. Her declaration was really a determination to defend her recognition of the fact that she was a spiritual idea and reflected God, against being belittled or interfered with by any false testimony, or human suggestion.

“Do not tempt the Lord thy God.” Do not believe that man’s spiritual selfhood, which is the expression of God’s being, is susceptible to being tempted.

GOLDEN TEXT: John 8 : 58

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” — Christ Jesus

In an age of sin and sensuality hastening to greater development of power, ’tis fearful to consider the influence of belief without more honesty and understanding to steer clear of the fearful shoals on this dangerous and unexplored coast. The peril of Salem witchcraft even is not past, until that error be met by the understanding and destroyed; not the gallows, but explanation, destroys error. Science must be allowed to explain this phenomenon of belief, in contradistinction to that of Truth and Intelligence controlling man. An evil and artful mind is all the satan there is; and this is the fallen angel, or abused capacity; such a mind learning its control over other minds, will take the reins into its teeth, and Truth alone must take them out and guide it; as of old this mind works its spell in some manner on all it would harm, because the barriers against evil influences from such a source are not understood by the world in general, and the door is not readily closed against them. To this end metaphysics are important; study mind more and matter less, for we must find refuge in Soul, to escape the error of the latter days; and mediumship and mesmerism more than all else contribute to a terrible future development of discord. We should strongly insist on the majesty of Truth, and its control over error; and begin to-day denying right or reality to aught but God, and the true idea; saying, “depart from me all ye that work iniquity;” and thus break up the reign of error, and let the world of harmony and Truth re-appear. If spirit-returns were possible, they would grow beautifully less at every advanced stage of existence; for the departed would pass away from our ignorance, and we away from the belief of mediumship, until the beliefs of matter were gone, and we united through science; and the will of God “done on earth as it is done in heaven.”

The great demand of a fearful hour should not bring God nearer. The old belief was God speaks in thunder. Science and Health says, “Truth and Love come nearer in the hour of woe when strong faith or spiritual strength wrestles and prevails through the understanding of God.” Why? The Psalmist said, “If I make my bed in hell thou art there.” Because mortal mind is too intoxicated in pleasure to think of God when it selfishly enjoys itself; it is too drunk to think of the nearness of Truth; but in case of need, we sit up and listen. We should never be caught unawares. There is quite as much need of God’s nearness in the realm of sunshine; yes, more.

I am reminded of the telegram Mrs. Eddy sent to the National Student’s Association at Chicago. “While you are rejoicing in victory, the enemy is shooting you full of bullets.” We were rejoicing for what had been so far accomplished in Christian Science, and we were enthusiastic, and we got that telegram.

It was in 1906, following the disaster caused by an earthquake in San Francisco, that Mrs. Eddy’s secretary wrote the Directors of The Mother Church and referred to the fact that Christian Science churches “are not behind others in work for the benefit of humanity.” He transmitted Mrs. Eddy’s request for special collections to be taken for relief purposes at services in The Mother Church, and found that the Directors had already thoughtfully moved in that direction.

The gospel narrative says, “And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered,” “and his face did shine as the sun.”

This kind of praying, this fasting from material sense, ever brings the shining face, the outward manifestation of the illuminated consciousness, and thus these mountain experiences ever bring the brightness of a reflected glory to all who enter into the heart of prayer. Sometimes we see it in the face of a friend, ofttimes in the face of the faithful practitioner whose conscientious protests of Truth have brought relief to many burdened ones. So vital were Jesus’ protests of Truth, such fastings from material sense, such entrance into the holiest, that the disciples beheld his glory, and there appeared unto them two men “in glory.” This reflected radiance of being, expressing man’s unity with Truth and Love, became the living fact. It told of one life, and all living, moving, and having being in that forever life, which was clearly revealed to the disciples as the deathless reality of being.
